By Degrees Foundation has launched its Moving the Needle on Student Success campaign, a $5 million initiative to expand its kindergarten-to-career program by 2030 to every school in the Des Moines district’s north feeder pattern.

The campaign will scale a coordinated system of support that helps students succeed academically, plan for life after high school, and build financial stability for their futures, according to a news release.

So far, 70 individuals, corporations and foundations have committed over $4.4 million to the campaign, which is chaired by Michele and Steve Whitty. Joan Middleton is honorary chair.

“Students thrive when they have consistent support and clear pathways from an early age,” said Emily Westergaard, CEO at By Degrees Foundation, in a prepared statement. “This campaign allows us to deepen that support and ensure every student in north Des Moines has access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and beyond.”

By Degrees currently partners with Findley Elementary, Harding Middle and North High schools. The organization will expand to the remaining northside elementary schools, creating a pipeline of support across the full feeder pattern.

The campaign will focus on tripling the number of elementary students served annually, from 300 to 1,100 and expanding access to 529 college savings accounts from 600 students to 3,200.

The expanded By Degrees program will help more students explore postsecondary and career pathways earlier, stay engaged in school, and build financial assets for their postsecondary goals, according to the release.

By 2040, more than 6,000 Des Moines students are expected to benefit from the program.
