Anawim Housing is proposing the construction of nine residential housing units and a mixed-use commercial building on the southeast corner of Forest Avenue and 21st Street in Des Moines.

Though construction details have yet to be finalized, Ryan Moffatt, a city planner, said development of the townhomes is expected to come together quickly, as part of Hubbell Realty Co.’s “Nine Homes in Nine Days” initiative.

“We are going to build nine units for Anawim,” in nine days, said Steve Niebuhr, senior vice president of construction and management services for Hubbell Realty.

Hubbell is spearheading the project, calling on its trade partners to donate labor and materials to be used in the construction of the three-bedroom row dwellings, which will be leased at an affordable rate to low-income families.

Sister Stella Neill, Anawim’s executive director, confirmed that the project is being financed through a combination of sources, adding that Hubbell is leading the fund-raising efforts.

The 4,100-square-foot mixed-use structure, which will accommodate Anawim’s offices on the first floor, in addition to six apartments, Neill said, will be funded through “traditional resources” as well as money raised by the organization’s capital campaign.

Neil said Anawim has a purchase agreement to buy the 0.77-acre parcel from Polk County for about $50,000.

A site plan was approved by the Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission on Feb. 5.
