Planners found a need for collaboration in public transportation, according to Central Iowa’s annual Transit Roundtable survey, conducted in November.

A planning workshop to help educate, gather information, eliminate restrictions and build cooperation between Central Iowa’s public transportation services is in the works for this spring or summer.

“We are trying to make more efficient use out of our services,” said Dylan Mullenix, transportation planner for Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The roundtable includes local human service agencies, government officials, transportation providers, the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Central Iowa Regional Transportation Planning Alliance. The group hopes to bring the public transportation services together and eventually create a “Travelocity-like” service, Mullenix said, which would allow customers to make one call to get to their destination; the program would do the planning and set up the services.

Survey findings also suggested a greater need for public transportation between Greater Des Moines, Ames and Iowa City for medical needs.
