Congress approves funds for new federal courthouse in Des Moines

The final authorization for funding of new federal courthouse in Des Moines is in hand, the U.S. General Services Administration said in a release. Congress has approved $136.6 million for site acquisition, design and construction of a 230,000-square-foot U.S. Courthouse that would have nine courtrooms and 13 chambers. The project is considered a key part of future development of the Market District of the East Village. The city of Des Moines has proposed a site that includes land owned by the city and MidAmerican Energy Co., with property that is not devoted to the courthouse used for private development. The GSA plans to identify a site by next spring and acquire in the fall. The design is expected to start this spring with construction slated to begin in 2019 be completed in 2022.
