Now, Joan Hentschel has combined those two aspects of her life to open Hentschel Art Gallery in The Shops at Roosevelt.
“This is a good blend for me,” she said. “My business background helps me feel comfortable and do a good job when I’m consulting a corporate client, and my passion for art makes every day enjoyable.”
Hentschel does consulting work with businesses and individuals to help them find the right art. What she can do depends on what the owners’ goals are.
“What are your tastes?” she said. “How do you want the environment to feel? What sort of image do you want to project?”
Works by artists from all over the United States are featured in the gallery, she said, including several local artists like Hilde DeBruyne-Verhofste and Mary Kline-Misol.
“There is a broad spectrum of work,” Hentschel said. “And what people see is just a portion of it. There are many more works available. If a person has a particular style they like or a specific artist that they’re interested in, all they have to do is ask.”
Every six weeks, the gallery will go through a makeover by beginning a new exhibit. The opening night of each exhibit will feature a reception with wine and cheese. The next reception will be Wednesday, June 27, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The gallery will be featuring Florida artists Kathleen Brodeur and Edson Campos, and both will be present.
From time to time, Hentschel said, the gallery will also feature some sort of entertainment, such as musicians.
Hentschel said her corporate background has helped her in nearly every portion of her new business, from dealing with potential clients down to looking for artists.
“In terms of the way I approach an artist, by having my contracts in order and the professional manner with which I conduct myself, I’ve had several artists tell me how they were very impressed,” she said.
Her experience also helped her build contacts, which are invaluable in this business, she said.
“Art is not something that is bought every day,” Hentschel said. “It’s a relationship business. You have to make those relationships in order to survive.”
Hentschel Art Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
