Deere contract manufacturer closes, lays off 62

Bauer Built Manufacturing of Paton, west of Boone, is closing and laying off 62 people. Bauer was named to the Iowa Area Development Group Hall of Fame in 2003 for its business success. The company is known as a designer and manufacturer of the world’s largest planter frames and bars in the agriculture industry. It produces four-planter bar models for John Deere under the trade name Deere Bauer. The company also produces road maintenance equipment, cultivator toolbars and trailers. Also closing is DRT, LLC, a shared-services organization serving transportation operations teams, laying off 68 people. Twenty-six people will be laid off from the company’s administrative and waste management divisions, while another 42 will be laid off from the transportation and warehousing division. DRT is in Carter Lake, near Council Bluffs.
