Des Moines ranks as the fifth-best city for mid-career professionals (ages 30 to 44) among mid-size regions, according to Richard Florida’s latest research.

The rankings are part of his new book, “Who’s Your City?” which claims that where someone chooses to live is the most important decision of his or her life. Florida argues that place can have a huge impact on someone’s access to jobs, career path, social networks, family and lifestyle choices, wealth and overall happiness.

Florida is founder of the Creative Class Group, an advisory services firm that charts trends in business, communities and lifestyles. His national best-selling book, “The Rise of the Creative Class,” ranked Des Moines eighth for its creative class among metropolitan areas with populations of 250,000 to 500,000.

Florida’s new book provides rankings for every city-region in the United States and breaks them into categories, such as best places for new college graduates, young professionals, families with children, empty nesters and retirees. The book also unveils some interesting facts, including that 40 million Americans move each year, just 25 city-regions account for two-thirds of the world economy and 95 percent of its innovations, the job market in key fields is concentrating in fewer communities and there is a massive migration of the most highly educated and talented people to just a few city-regions.
