Homebuilding continued its slowdown in the Des Moines area in July with nearly 22% fewer residential building permits issued than in June, a review of communities’ building permit records shows.
Overall, 274 permits were issued for the construction of townhouses and single-family houses in July, the records show. The value of July’s residential permits totaled $75.7 million, 20% less than June’s permit value of $95.3 million.
The average value of a residential building permit issued in July was $276,439, the review showed.
The number of residential permits issued in 13 Des Moines-area communities and Polk County has been on a downward trend since April. In March, 513 residential permits were issued, a high for the year. In April, 468 residential permits were issued.
The rising costs and limited availability of lumber and other building materials have affected homebuilding across the country, according to the National Association of Home Builders.
July data on housing starts is not yet available.
