The Des Moines Art Center has appointed Susan Kloewer as its first chief operating officer, a newly created position aimed at supporting organizational growth and long-term sustainability. Kloewer, who has more than two decades of leadership experience in Iowa’s cultural and nonprofit sectors, will join the art center’s executive leadership team, effective Dec. 1. Her responsibilities will include overseeing operations, strengthening cross-departmental collaboration and enhancing visitor engagement. Her background includes senior roles at the State Historical Society of Iowa, the Science Center of Iowa and most recently United Way of Central Iowa. Kloewer holds a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University and a master’s degree from Drake University. “The Art Center’s staff, budget, and operations have grown exponentially in size and complexity over the last many years,” John and Mary Pappajohn Director and CEO Kelly Baum said in a news release. “Our responsibilities to our community, to our collections, and to our architectural landmarks are many, and consolidating operations in the hands of a seasoned administrator like Susan is key to our success.”
