Days ahead of the Iowa caucuses, fast-food workers at Greater Des Moines restaurants are walking off the job today with demands for a $15 minimum wage and union rights. Striking cooks and cashiers from McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and Long John Silver’s, among other chains, are participating in the protest, organizers said in a release. The striking fast-food workers are supported by a coalition of local faith, labor and community organizations, including Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement. In addition to fast-food workers, home care and child care workers who are fighting for $15 said they would join in the protests. The workers, who say that 48 percent of workers in Iowa are paid less than $15 per hour, also announced that they will protest outside the GOP debate at the Iowa Events Center this evening.
