The Carpenter Paper Building, the Ingersoll dinner theater and the Klein Building in Highland Park — and the people behind them — are among the projects named as historic preservation award recipients this year by the Des Moines Heritage Trust.
The nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of historic buildings in the Des Moines metro will recognize eight leaders and projects that are leaving their mark across the region during the annual Historic Preservation Awards Dinner on May 14. It is presented by Estes Construction, and is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Des Moines Heritage Center, 120 E. Fifth St. in Des Moines.
Tim Waddell, president of the Des Moines Heritage Trust board, said this year’s winners “showcase the power of preservation to transform communities and neighborhoods.”
“Whether through dedicated, visionary leadership or innovative redevelopment, each honoree is helping turn historic structures and iconic local landmarks into dynamic spaces that serve our region today while honoring its rich heritage,” he said in a news release announcing the winners.
According to the release, the awards honor the best in historic preservation and recognize projects that demonstrate vision, innovation and a commitment to protecting and revitalizing the places that define the community’s character.
