Melissa McCollum has been named Des Moines’ new library director, the city announced in a news release.

McColum

McCollum, who begins her new role on Feb. 9, is a Des Moines native and graduated from Roosevelt High School. McCollum received a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in 1996 and a master’s of science in information from the University of Michigan’s School of information in 1999, according to her LinkedIn profile.

“The Des Moines Public Library played an important role in my life growing up, and it’s exciting to return to Des Moines and ensure it continues as a vital community hub for information, learning, connection, and innovation,” McCollum said in a prepared statement.

McCollum has worked in leadership roles in libraries and other public service positions for more than 20 years. Her professional experience includes serving as library director and community services director for the city of El Segundo, Calif., and community library manager for Los Angeles County Library. She currently is a senior recreation manager for the city of Manhattan Beach, Calif.

McCollum has been recognized for her effectiveness with accolades such as the American Library Association’s I Love My Librarian award for outstanding community service.

“Melissa stood out from other candidates in our search through her passion for the community role of libraries,” Tim Hickman, president of the Des Moines Public Library board of trustees, said in a prepared statement. “She is a thoughtful, compassionate leader who will continue to make the Des Moines Public Library indispensable to everyone in our city.”

McCollum’s selection follows a nationwide search that began after former library director Susan A. Woody retired in June. The search was led by Bradbury Miller Associates.
