A $13 million Safe Streets and Roads for All grant has been awarded to the city of Des Moines by the U.S. Department of Transportation, according to a news release. Des Moines, which was one of 70 entities to be awarded the funds, will use the money to pay for additional school-zone speed-feedback signs, retroreflective traffic signal backplates, pedestrian crossing improvements, on-street bicycle facilities and other safety measures. Also, work will be done along Southeast 14th Street, Forest Avenue and the Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway/19th Street corridor to reduce left-turn crashes.
