Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences has received an updated Carnegie Classification recognizing it as a Research Colleges and Universities institution, adding to its existing Special Focus: Medical Schools and Centers designation and placing it among only 24 U.S. institutions with both distinctions. The Research Colleges and Universities classification recognizes institutions that invest at least $2.5 million annually in research and development and demonstrate significant research activity and a meaningful contribution to discovery and innovation. The university’s research spans areas such as public health, neuroscience, oncology, cardiovascular science, and artificial intelligence, with a focus on translational applications in patient care. DMU has also expanded its academic offerings with a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences program aimed at training researchers to address complex health challenges. “This classification from Carnegie affirms the intentional investments DMU has made to elevate research as a core pillar of our academic mission and demonstrates our role as a national contributor to health sciences discovery,” Angela Franklin, DMU’s president and CEO, said in a news release. “This work enhances the educational experience for our students and fulfills our promise to improve health and serve communities.”
