Name: Donald Coffin

New position: As senior vice president and chief lending officer of Bankers Trust Co., Coffin manages all of the bank’s residential, real estate and commercial lending.

Vitals: Coffin has more than 25 years of commercial banking experience. He most recently served as the Des Moines-based managing director of national commercial banking for The Private Bank and Trust Co. of Chicago. A graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Coffin also has served as region head of the central division of LaSalle National Bank and executive vice president of Mercantile Bank of Iowa, now U.S. Bank.

Job one: As banks face tough times during this economic downturn, Coffin believes Bankers Trust is positioned to gain market share and is especially looking for growth in commercial lending. “People are attracted to quality,” he said, “and we’re seeing a tremendous increase in deposits, a tremendous increase in loan applications, both residential and commercial, and I think some of the other banks may not be in a position to make loans and to grow.”
