Paul Trombino |
Paul Trombino, director of the Iowa Department of Transportation, has resigned effective Nov. 28, KCCI reported. Employees were notified Wednesday, but were given no reason for Trombino’s departure.
Gov. Terry Branstad appointed Trombino to the $147,000-a- year post in 2011. Trombino had worked 17 years for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
Despite Trombino’s success in laying out the case for an increase in the gas tax, lawmakers left him millions of dollars short on his proposed budget last session. The department has faced cutting up to 70 jobs.
Trombino led an effort to prioritize state highway construction projects, often noting that the state had a huge backlog of maintenance and would not be building many new routes. One of his primary goals was to smooth logistics for truck, train and barge traffic, and transfers among them.
Trombino, who was unavailable for comment, has been known for his work in using big data to prioritize construction projects that would help economic development. He has worked closely with state economic development Director Debi Durham, who also plans to leave the Branstad administration, but hasn’t announced a time frame.
He also has supported multimodal transportation, suggesting that road building isn’t the only answer to providing good mobility. He discussed this at the Business Record’s recent Power Breakfast.
The Business Record could not reach Trombino. His office issued a statement indicating that he will look for a job outside of state government.
