The Downtown Community Alliance commissioned G.E. Wattier Architecture Inc. to look at the development of the Greenline trail as a way to help boost economic development in the East Village. But when the city began discussions about an extensive downtown study, the plans were shelved, most likely until after the MLK extension is complete.
The proposal calls for a six- to eight-block trail with trees, benches, green space and landscape artwork. Greg Wattier said it would go near his firm’s new offices on East Court Avenue, and could help draw attention to the larger area beyond East Locust Street.
“It’s sort of a convoluted process at the moment,” Wattier said, adding that it’s unknown whether it will be a private or public project. He said the Union Pacific Corp. is trying to sell some of its land up to the track and that this trail could be part of a larger effort downtown once the downtown planning study is complete.
