Des Moines International Airport had its second-best year for airplane boardings in its history, officials announced today.

The airlines that operate at DSM enplaned 991,911 passengers last year, up 12,000 passengers, or 1.3 percent, over 2006. Total passenger traffic in and out of the airport was 1,982,485 for the year.

“Year over year, we continue to outperform,” said Craig Smith, aviation director, in a press release. “All in all, DSM is doing as well as any small commercial airport in the nation, and better than most.”

Air cargo handling was down 1.8 percent for the year, but still exceeded 200 million pounds. Rental car revenues were up 13 percent in 2007, with August being the biggest month in the airport’s history.
