The e5w project in the East Village has applied for construction permits with the city of Des Moines.

Brian Borchardt of ST Howard Development, the developer of the building at East Fifth and Walnut streets, said the company has submitted everything to the city for review and hopes to hear back by April. Borchardt said construction could start as soon as April.

The 43,000-square-foot, five-story building will house two floors of commercial and three floors of residential units.

Rochon Corp. of Iowa has been awarded the construction contract. The $6.5 million project is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
