The East High School Alumni Foundation has announced a $4 million Campaign for East High School, launched by a $1 million anonymous gift and leadership donations from B.J. Baker III, chairman and CEO of Baker Group, and J. Elder II, president of Elder Corp., both East High School alumni. The Campaign for East High will support two major initiatives: updating and expanding the “activities campus” for outdoor athletic and arts extracurricular activities, and expanding the endowment for student scholarships. The foundation currently has an endowment of $4.5 million with the intent to increase the endowment to $5 million. Last year, the foundation  awarded $186,700 to 87 students for postsecondary education assistance, with a goal to award more than $200,000 annually. The campaign is co-chaired by alumni Dr. Stephen Taylor, retired orthopedic surgeon, and Tim Pearson, attorney with Laden & Pearson Law. “As a proud East High alum, I feel it is critically important to ‘level the playing field’ for our East High students,” Pearson said. “Our facilities need to be upgraded so East High students have the same opportunities as their suburban counterparts.” The campaign has currently raised nearly $3 million of its $4 million goal, with plans to reach the goal by the end of 2021 and begin construction on the activities campus in 2022.
