EPA: Fracking harms water quality in some circumstances
A scientific study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, ordered by Congress, provides evidence that fracking can harm water quality in certain conditions. The report identifies conditions that cause the most trouble. The impact can be severe when groundwater is limited, when chemicals used in the fracking process are spilled, when wells are damaged, and when chemicals are injected directly into water supplies, for example, EPA found. Iowa has had fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, for water production but has no commercial oil production. Iowa produces sand used in fracking in other states.
