Facebook begins construction on next phase of data center campus in Altoona; $86.2 million permit issued for project

390 wordsAll Latest News, Real Estate and DevelopmentConstruction has begun on a new data center for Facebook Inc. at its campus in Altoona, information from the city’s commercial building permit data shows.
The permit valued at $86.2 million was among the 81 issued in the Des Moines area in April. The value of the April permits totaled more than $187 million; in the first four months of 2021, permits valued at more than $187 million have been issued.
The permit for Facebook is for the construction a 671,298-square-foot building that will include eight data halls, mechanical spaces, backup generator power equipment centers and administrative offices, according to city officials. The site will include 196 parking stalls.
The building is the first structure that will be built on Facebook property that is located north of 25th Street Northwest in Altoona.
Elsewhere in the Des Moines area:
• A permit valued at $13 million was issued for construction of a 16,483-square-foot addition to Saydel High School, located between Des Moines and Ankeny at 5601 N.E. Seventh St.
• A permit valued at $10.4 million was issued for tenant improvements to a new warehouse at 7310 S.E. Crosswinds Drive in Ankeny that will be occupied by Amazon Inc.
• A permit valued at $5 million was issued for construction of a three-story, 36-unit apartment building planned at 6120 N.E. 12th St. in Pleasant Hill. The apartment building is planned for affordable senior housing.
• A permit valued at $2.3 million was issued for construction of an 11,734-square-foot Class A office building at 8951 Windsor Parkway in Johnston. Impact7G, an environmental services company, will occupy the building.
• A permit valued at $1.4 million was issued for construction of an 8,861-square-foot office-warehouse building at 8951 Thomas Ave. in Johnston. The building, offices, conference rooms, rooftop deck and warehouse will house Setpoint Mechanical Solutions.
The Johnston City Council in April approved a development agreement with Setpoint that includes a forgivable loan of up to $154,639, 20% of which will be forgiven each year for five years, according to a city document. Setpoint currently employs 15 people and plans to hire six additional workers over the next three years.
