Floods delay fertilizer shipments

Mississippi River locks have been closed for weeks due to flooding, which has delayed the usual northward shipment of fertilizer needed for Midwestern farm fields, Successful Farming reported. Railroads also have been disrupted. A harsh winter and widespread floods already have stressed the farm economy. If fertilizer applications are missed or poorly timed, yields could suffer. Also, shippers could face lost profits and higher penalties for returning barges and rail cars.
