Gannett loss widens amid falling revenue
Gannett Co., which is fending off a takeover bid, reported a wider loss in its latest quarter as advertisers continued to turn away from print media and circulation revenue fell, the Wall Street Journal reported. Gannett, which owns the Des Moines Register, reported sales of $751.4 million in the fourth quarter, down 12 percent from the year earlier. Circulation revenue dropped 9 percent and print-ad sales dropped 24 percent. Sales from digital advertising and market services declined about 3 percent. The company reported a loss of $14.2 million, or 13 cents a share, in the quarter, compared with loss of $13.6 million, or 12 cents a share, a year earlier. Last month, MNG Enterprises Inc., better known as Digital First Media, offered to purchase Gannett for $12 a share after building up a stake in the company.
