The Running Room is dashing into Iowa, with its first store opening in the Galleria at Jordan Creek in March. Based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the business currently has 92 corporately owned locations, 14 of which are in the United States and concentrated in Minnesota. Now the business is moving through the Midwest, with a second possible location near downtown Des Moines and other stores in St. Louis and Kansas City.

John Stanton founded the business in 1984 in the living room of an old house. In 2005, he added The Walking Room. The businesses are designed to provide knowledge and quality products about the sports.

The Running Room offers clinics tailored to everyone from beginners to marathon runners. It also strives to develop a sense of community among runners, hosting free runs on Wednesday evenings and Sundays, with participants split into groups based on distance and pace.

The store also sells many private-label products the company has designed from runner feedback.

Six full-time staff members (who are currently training in Minneapolis) and two to three part-time workers will operate the store at 6305 Mills Civic Parkway. A grand opening and fun run/walk will take place on March 12 at 6 p.m. Stanton will be available to sign his books and answer questions.
