Goodwill opening new store in Urbandale store by summer 2008
Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa is planning a new building in Urbandale.
A site plan for a 15,000-square-foot facility was approved at the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission meeting on Nov. 26. The single-story building at 2500 N.W. Urbandale Drive will house 10,000 square feet of retail space and 5,000 square feet of warehouse space.
Marlyn McKeen, president of Goodwill Industries, said it plans on closing the store at 86th Street and Douglas Avenue and relocating its operations to the new store when it’s completed. Goodwill doesn’t plan on adding any new employees when the new facility is open. The building is 1,000 square feet larger than the previous location.
McKeen said the new store will have a shipping dock for trucks and a drive-through donation lane to increase Goodwill’s ability to handle larger donations.
“We try to become more efficient with material handling,” said McKeen.
Construction should start in the next few weeks on the new facility and is scheduled to be open for business in June 2008.
McKeen said the estimated cost of the store and warehouse is $2.6 million. No private fund raising is needed for the new facility.
