Des Moines and West Des Moines are the first cities in the U.S. to receive upgrades to multi-gig speeds from Google Fiber. On Tuesday, all existing Google Fiber customers on 1 Gig plans were automatically upgraded to 3 Gig speeds, and customers on 3 Gig plans increased to 5 Gig with no increase to the pricing structure. New customers in Des Moines and West Des Moines are also eligible for the upgraded speeds. As one of the company’s newer markets, much of the local network built in Des Moines used 25 Gig PON technology, which can support multi-gig speeds. The company said it plans to extend similar speed upgrades to additional markets nationwide. Google Fiber first broke ground in Des Moines in March 2022 and has an office in Valley Junction in West Des Moines.
