Greater Des Moines real estate attorney convicted of bank fraud

174 wordsAll Latest News, Real Estate and DevelopmentAttorney Jason Springer was convicted of seven counts of bank fraud and real estate agent Rick Makohoniuk was convicted of one count of bank fraud after an eight-day trial in U.S. District Court in Des Moines. The case resulted from a house-flipping scheme. They will be sentenced at a later date. Bank fraud carries a maximum penalty fo 30 years in prison, a $1 million fine and the possibility of restitution. Federal prosecutors said the scheme ran from March 2009 to March 2011 and involved the short sales of 18 houses in Greater Des Moines and a financial loss of about $400,000. Makohoniuk was accused of submitting false financial documents to a lender for one of the houses. Springer was accused of submitting false federal settlement statements. Two other men, Nathan Smith and Patrick Steven, have each pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud. Mortgage broker Jerod Hogan has pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to make a false statement to a financial institution. Those three will be sentenced May 14.
