Following the federal government reopening, Grimes has resumed its special census with field census workers restarting door-to-door visits on Thursday. These workers, who are federal employees carrying U.S. Census Bureau identification, will visit households that did not complete the special census online, asking residents about the number of people in their home and their ages. If no one answers, a note with a phone number will be left for residents to complete the census by phone. Grimes requested the special census due to growth since the 2020 census. Its population is now estimated at 19,116 residents, up by 3,724 people. This increase could bring the city up to an additional $446,880 annually. This state and federal funding would total an extra $2.2 million before the next official census in 2030. Results from the special census are expected in 2026.
