“We plan to move the business to the building,” said Jack Hatch, president and founder of the Hatch Development Group and owner of the building.

Hatch said the restoration has been a “continual process,” and is scheduled to be finished in late spring of 2008, most likely sometime in April.

When the alterations are complete, the building will include 37,000 square feet of restored space. The street-level space will be offered for restaurant and retail use. The second and third floors will be used for commercial and office space.

As restoration progresses, “the space is now beginning to spawn a lot of interest” among potential tenants, Hatch said.

The Chamberlain Building, named after its initial owner, was built in 1918. Since that time it has been home to several automobile dealerships, including the first Des Moines Chrysler dealership, and a computer store. It has been vacant for the past several years.

After the demolition process, now the construction is well on the way, Hatch said. The exterior of the building is almost complete, but has required much attention; including restoring, painting and power washing the brick and stone carvings, which Hatch described as “significant and ornate.”

“We are having new stones made to replace (those that were) lost,” Hatch said.

Eastpointe Center, Altoona

Ball Construction Services LLC has broken ground on the Eastpointe Center I building and is scheduled to begin constructing the foundation within the week, said Russ Smith, a project manager with Ball Construction.

The 20-acre lot is located on the north side of Altoona, near Interstate 80, at 160 Adventureland Drive.

Building I of the Eastpointe Center is a multiple-tenant facility and will total approximately 25,000 square feet. Valley Bank and Skinner Law Offices have committed to be tenants, Smith said.

The building is scheduled to be finished anywhere from “spring to mid-summer next year,” Smith said.

The site has the potential to house six to eight additional buildings. Grading for a walking path and pond are under way right now, and Smith said paving of the area will begin in the spring.
