Hy-Vee to use AI to tally inventory in 5 stores

Hy-Vee has begun using robots to keep track of inventory in two stores and plans to expand the technology to three others, the West Des Moines-based grocer announced. Hy-Vee is partnering with San Francisco-based Simbe Robotics in the move to roll out the autonomous inventory management and retail intelligence system called Tally. The system, which uses robots, scans products in aisles up to three times a day to ensure items are in stock and in the correct location. Hy-Vee, in its release, noted the system can help reduce out-of-stock items by up to 30%. The robot will travel along store aisles as it scans products. It will be able to safely maneuver around shoppers and employees, the news release said. Tally robots are in use at Hy-Vee stores in Ankeny and Lincoln, Neb., and will soon be added at stores in Altoona, Omaha and Lee’s Summit, Mo.
