Illinois seed company to expand to Ames

An Illinois-based seed company has announced plans to expand its operation to Ames. In a news release, Wyffels Hybrids announced it would build a new facility on about 150 acres near Interstate Highway 35 and U.S. Highway 30. “Our western business has been a critical part of our growth for many years and we’re excited about taking this step towards the future,” Jacob Wyffels, Wyffels Hybrids vice president of production, said in the release. The first phase of construction will include a new warehouse and distribution center. Future phases will include corn production capabilities, enhanced research and corn breeding operations, demonstration opportunities, and meeting and training resources for employees and customers. “Our customers expect a certain level of quality and personal service,” Wyffels said. “This new site will be key to meeting those expectations in many aspects for years to come.” The site is on land purchased from Alliant Energy and provides access to talent from Iowa State University and to two major interstate highways. Construction is scheduled to begin next spring with Wyffels Hybrids beginning to ship from the site in spring 2024.
