Five men will be inducted into the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame in a May 21 ceremony at Drake University in Des Moines.

The honorees are Dan Agnew, president of Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Co.; Max Holmes, deceased, who founded the company now known as Holmes Murphy & Associates Inc.; George Kochheiser, retired president of EMC Insurance; Lawrence Matthews, retired president of the former Wittmer-Kaufman-Evans insurance agency; and Donald Shepard, retired CEO of Aegon N.V. in Cedar Rapids.

The induction ceremony will be held at the Olmsted Center on the Drake campus, beginning with a 5 p.m. social hour. Dinner begins at 6 p.m., and the program is scheduled for 6:45. Individual tickets are $30, and a table seating eight costs $300.

• Dan Agnew has been president of Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Co. since 1991. A native of Malcom, Agnew graduated from Grinnell High School in 1963 and the University of Northern Iowa in 1967. After two years as a teacher in Newton, he joined Grinnell Mutual.

Agnew lives in Grinnell, where he has served his community through participation in the Lions Club, the United Way, Junior Achievement, the Boy Scouts of America and the Greater Grinnell Development Corp.

• Max L. Holmes founded a Des Moines insurance agency in 1932, at the height of the Great Depression. In 1948, he hired J. Raymond Murphy as a salesman; the two worked together to build the Holmes Murphy & Associates Inc. firm that still thrives today.

Holmes died in 1975 at the age of 78. Murphy died two years later at the age of 60. Murphy was inducted into the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame in 2001.

• George Kochheiser played a key role in building Des Moines-based EMC Insurance Cos. A veteran of World War II, he joined the company in 1949 after graduating from Drake University. In 1982, he was named president and chief operating officer of the company, and retired from those posts in 1991. He retired from the board in 2008 and now lives in Cincinnati.

•Lawrence Matthews joined the Wittmer-Kaufman-Evans insurance agency in 1947 and was president of the company when it was sold to Kirke-Van Orsdel Inc. in 1982. He was also a charter member of the Iowa chapter of the Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter organization, and served as its president in 1954-55.

Matthews, who still lives in Des Moines, was a member of the Drake Relays board of directors for 25 years and also served as clerk of the course for the annual event during that time. He has been president of the Des Moines Rotary Club and has served on the board of the local Girl Scouts organization.

• Donald Shepard retired in 2008 as chairman of the executive board and CEO of Aegon N.V. He is now chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and serves as a director of PNC Financial Services Group Inc. and CSX Corp.

Shepard, who lives in Baltimore, began his career in 1970 with Life Investors Inc. and was named chief operating officer in 1985. He was named CEO of Aegon USA in 1989 and in 2002 was named CEO of Aegon N.V.
