More than 750,000 Americans died from heart disease last year. Nearly half of those people had no symptoms prior to their first heart attacks, which were fatal.
Now, through a joint program of The Iowa Clinic and the National Heart Organization, Central Iowans can determine their risk – and do something about it. By visiting www.iowaclinic.com and clicking on the HeartAware ad, individuals can take a confidential, personal risk questionnaire that takes less than seven minutes to complete. Each participant will receive an instant risk assessment, and those with heightened risk for heart disease will be offered a free 30-minute consultation with an Iowa Clinic physician.
“Our goal is to help raise awareness and save the lives of Central Iowans who don’t know they have cardiac disease,” said Amy Hilmes, an Iowa Clinic spokeswoman. “Obviously, we’re not treating anyone; that’s up to their primary care physician.” The free screening includes a check of cholesterol levels, a blood pressure reading and an ankle brachial indices ultrasound scan to test for vascular health. Those with elevated readings will be referred to a cardiologist.
HeartAware’s risk ratings are based on data collected for more than 40 years by the Framingham Heart Study, which considers both modifiable risks such as smoking and other lifestyle habits, and non-modifiable risks factors, such as family health history.
