Iowa Food Bank Association poll finds ‘widespread bipartisan support’ for state-level hunger relief

222 wordsAll Latest News, Iowa Stops HungerIn a new survey from the Iowa Food Bank Association, 71% of respondents said food insecurity is a problem in Iowa, and half said the state is not doing enough to support people facing hunger. Most respondents also said they support public-sector efforts to make healthy food more accessible.
Highlights include:
- 80% support increasing state funding for food banks to purchase Choose Iowa food (products raised or grown in Iowa).
- 71% agree the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, helps those experiencing food insecurity – and 64% say SNAP helps the Iowa economy.
- 74% support Double Up Food Bucks, a program that helps SNAP recipients buy more fresh fruits and vegetables.
- 77% support Summer EBT, which Iowa is joining in 2026 after opting out the past two years.
- 77% support universal school food programs that fund free breakfast and lunch for all students.
In addition, 77% said they have had to change the amounts or types of food they purchase and 68% said they are dissatisfied with the price of food. Survey firm Murmuration surveyed 904 registered voters in Iowa from Feb. 13-17. The results were weighted by age, race, gender, education and party identification to be representative of the population of registered voters in Iowa. The survey has a margin of error of 4.1% at a 95% confidence level.
