Iowans owe utilities $40 million; state worried
Iowa’s largest utilities report that customers owe $40 million on payments, Iowa Public Radio reported.
Iowa Human Rights Department spokesman Jerry McKim said there is more trouble detailed in the utilities report. “Just for September and October, there were 8,896 (homes) disconnected,” McKim said. That put the number of disconnected homes at the largest October figure since 1999.
A federal program protects residents from having power shut off between Nov. 1 and March 31.
McKim said only households that have been certified as eligible for low income assistance and have registered for the program are covered by the shutoff moratorium.
