IPP: Iowa claims on nitrate reduction overstated

In a new report, the nonprofit, left-leaning Iowa Policy Project claims farmers’ voluntary efforts under the state’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy have been less effective than claimed in the latest report on the strategy’s progress. For example, Iowa’s acreage enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program is up over the past five years, but still a half-million acres under the 2 million previous enrollment. While some farmers have added to the acres using cover crops to hold soil, other have removed conservation practices in those same areas. And while 125,000 acres of cover crops were added between 2014 and 2015, that still amounts to less than 2 percent of crop acreage in the state, the Iowa City-based organization reported.
