Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine has announced a $5 million gift commitment from ISU alumni Scott and Angie State that will launch an expansion of the Large Animal Hospital at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center. The 21,000-square-foot expansion will help extend services to horses by increasing intensive care areas, adding space for equine reproduction services and growing equine rehabilitation services. The project has been approved by the Iowa Board of Regents and the total cost will be $14.1 million. It is estimated to be completed by 2027, a news release said. Dr. Dan Grooms, Iowa State’s dean of veterinary medicine, said the gift is a “powerful catalyst” for the project. “A growing equine industry in Iowa has led to the need for an equine facilities expansion that will elevate the college’s capabilities to provide services to clients, educate the next generation of veterinarians and conduct cutting-edge clinical research,” Grooms said in a prepared statement. Scott State earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nuclear engineering from Iowa State, and Angie State received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art and design. Angie’s father, Dr. Ray Cooney, graduated from Iowa State’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1946 and operated a veterinary clinic. Scott and his brother own a quarter horse racing operation called RDS Legacy Racing. “Supporting the College of Veterinary Medicine’s vision for advancing equine care, education and research means a great deal to us,” said Scott and Angie State, who reside in Scottsdale, Ariz. “Iowa State had a profound impact on our lives and our family’s history with veterinary medicine.”
