“We have had stands downtown for a number of years,” said Des Moines traffic engineer Gary Fox. “Typically they’ve been around hotels, and a couple of years ago we put one by the Iowa Events Center.”

This one is on the east side of Third Street at its intersection with Court. No shelter or other structure is involved, just a sign to allow taxis to stop there and keep other vehicles out.

Fox said Mike Utley, president of the Historic Court Avenue Association, was a leading advocate for designating the spot as a taxi stand.
