After submitting the application, the city of Johnston will be notified of the grant authorization in February 2008. MidAmerican Energy specifies that funds are to be used to promote energy efficiency by providing wind breaks and shade, while beautifying parks, roadways and other common areas.

If the grant is made, Johnston will use the funds to replace trees on the Merle Hay Road entrance islands and in the Green Meadows greenbelt. Trees within the Merle Hay islands died and have been removed. Replacing them with a variety of species could keep disease damage to a minimum.

Johnston has been a Tree City USA for 14 years. Qualifications consist of having a tree board and committing funds ($2 per capita annually) to care for the urban forest.
