Both cities jointly received the association’s In the Public Interest Award for what is called the Station #43 project, a $4.7 million plan to build and equip a fire station that will serve both communities. It is estimated that had they gone alone with separate fire stations, the cities would have paid a total of more than $50 million over the next 10 years. As it stands, annual operating costs for the joint project will be about $2.2 million, with a 10-year cost savings of $21.5 million. Urbandale is paying for the construction, equipment and operation costs, while staffing expenses are shared, with Urbandale paying 60 percent and Clive paying 40 percent. The award was presented today during the annual meeting of the Taxpayers Association of Central Iowa.
