House Republicans unveiled a proposal Thursday to create a federal paid leave policy that would be covered by employers, The Hill reported. The Workflex in the 21st Century Act, drafted with the help of the Society for Human Resource Management, would exempt businesses from having to comply with state paid leave laws if they offer a minimum level of paid time off and at least one flexible working arrangement. According to SHRM, employees could accrue the leave over the course of a plan year or employers can offer it in a lump sum. “This bill is a new approach that incentivizes more employers to offer paid leave and flexibility to help employees navigate their work and life,” Lisa Horn, SHRM’s director of congressional affairs, said in a SHRM newsletter post.
