Mass layoff events rose by about 115 to 1,388. The number of people who filed initial claims for unemployment as a result of mass layoffs rose to 135,600. Mass layoffs have increased steadily in the last three months, after dropping significantly between January and February.
Today’s report comes after the bureau announced last week that extended mass layoffs, those lasting longer than 30 days, for the first quarter of this year fell to the lowest point since 2006.
As a region, the Midwest actually saw a decline in mass layoffs in April. In Iowa, mass layoffs were down from 17 to 13 from last April, causing about 1,388 people to make initial claims for unemployment.
