The Greater Des Moines Community Foundation is hoping to educate the public on the virtues of the “Yes to Destiny” sales tax proposal by bringing in leaders of communities that have successfully implemented similar economic development models.

Tomorrow night Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper will speak from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Hoyt Sherman Place. His city passed a similar sales tax initiative to support arts and culture in the city.

“This gives the public a chance to ask pertinent questions about the proposal,” said Leisha Barcus, director of strategic initiatives with the Community Foundation. “Why was it so widely accepted? Can it work here? How have other communities done this and turned it into a success?”

On June 26, former Pittsburgh Mayor Tom Murphy will speak at a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hoyt Sherman Place.

Register to attend either event by calling 883-2626 or by visiting www.desmoinesfoundation.org.

The “Yes to Destiny” proposal will be voted on July 10 by residents in Polk, Dallas and Warren counties.
