Iowa Banking Magazine, a niche publication that has covered Iowa’s banking industry for the past 16 years, has been purchased by veteran banker Dan McGowan. McGowan purchased the business in October from Don Jordahl, who founded the publication in 1992, and began operating it last month. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“It looked like a natural for someone who’s been around for as long as I have,” said McGowan, who founded Waukee State Bank in 1996 and served as its president and CEO for 10 years before selling it to First American Bank in 2006. “We’re just looking forward to serving the Iowa banking community. Having worked in the industry and then owning a bank, I know a slug of people in the banking industry.”

Prior to Waukee State Bank, McGowan had been with Boatmen’s Bank since 1982.

The monthly magazine, which has just under 1,000 subscribers, works closely with the Iowa Bankers Association (IBA).

Jordahl said he has fond memories of his role with Iowa Banking Magazine. “I really enjoyed my years as a banker with the Brenton Banking Group, and I really enjoyed my years as a correspondent banker with Bankers Trust (Co.), but the greatest of all was working with Iowa bankers as a part of Iowa Banking Magazine,” he said in an article in the IBA’s electronic newsletter.

McGowan plans to contribute to the editorial content. “This is a good business and it’s just something that I want to get my arms around,” he said. “Every day I feel a little bit more comfortable.”
