Catholic Health Initiatives Health at Home, doing business as Mercy Respiratory Care and Med Supply, has agreed to pay $189,061 to the federal government to resolve allegations that it overbilled Iowa’s Medicaid program for purchases of durable medical equipment, according to a release from the office of the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Iowa. The settlement resolves claims that Mercy Respiratory Care and Med Supply improperly billed Medicaid from Jan. 1, 2013, to Dec. 31, 2015, by continuing to charge for the equipment after receiving full payment for the equipment’s purchase price. “This recovery sends the message to health care providers there will be consequences if they fail to comply with state and federal regulations,” U.S. Attorney Marc Krickbaum said in a statement. “We also note and appreciate the provider’s cooperation throughout the investigation.” The investigation was initiated by Krickbaum’s office with the assistance of the state’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General.
