MidAmerican Energy has positioned itself to reach its goal of getting all its power from renewable sources with the announcement today of another $922 million wind energy project.

The utility reported it will be the first investor-owned electric utility in the nation to reach that milestone, based on customers’ usage on an annual basis. That goal will be reached when the latest project, Wind XII, is completed in late 2020.

The project must be approved by the Iowa Utilities Board. As was the case with the other large recent wind projects, MidAmerican won’t increase customers’ rates to pay for the project. The company is still considering construction sites, which will be announced later.

“Wind XII will transform our 100 percent renewable energy vision from a bold dream into a reality,” Adam Wright, MidAmerican Energy’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “Wind XII is a clear demonstration of our commitment to and investment in the cleaner, more sustainable energy future our customers want and our environment deserves.” The renewable energy projects have helped keep electric rates low, Wright added.

The latest work will create more than 300 full-time construction jobs and 28 permanent operations and maintenance positions. The project will mean $6.9 million in Iowa property tax payments on wind turbines and nearly $5.6 million more in annual landowner easement payments.

In 2017, MidAmerican Energy paid $19.6 million in Iowa property taxes on wind turbines.
