More than 50 of the 544 positions Aviva has pledged to create over the next three years will pay more than $100,000 per year, according to data obtained through an open records request by the Business Record to the Iowa Department of Economic Development.

A half-dozen of the new positions will pay more than $250,000 annually, with the top new position listed at $293,940. At the lower end of the pay scale, just under half of the jobs will pay between $40,000 and $60,000, with the lowest-paying position that qualifies for economic development incentives listed at $41,822.

The company expects to increase its volume of business by 50 percent this year, said Chris Littlefield, an executive vice president with Aviva USA. It has hired 200 people since January, and has about 70 openings currently.

“You kind of have to look in your crystal ball to determine the levels you’ll need when your business is growing as fast as ours is,” he said. Littlefield said the salaries are comparable with other financial services employers in Central Iowa.

According to 2006 Bureau of Labor Statistics figures, business operations specialist positions in the Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area paid an average of $53,200 a year; financial manager positions averaged $91,530 and chief executive officers averaged $149,500 in salaries.

Aviva currently employs about 800 people at three locations in downtown Des Moines, and will continue to hire over the next three years as it consolidates to a single West Des Moines campus. The 360,000-square-foot headquarters facility is expected to be completed by early 2010.
