Chef Jeremy Morrow has opened a new bar and restaurant called Town Hall Tavern at 1250 Eighth St. in West Des Moines, the same building once occupied by Bordo’s Eatery & Sauce. Morrow said the concept is a new American tavern, describing it as a bar/restaurant that serves contemporary versions of classic tavern foods. Town Hall also features specialty drinks and an “interesting” wine and beer selection, with 90 percent of the wines under $5 a glass.
“Regardless of economic circumstances, people will always go out to drink, and they’ll always want sandwiches or comfort food,” Morrow said. “I hope to be recession-proof.”
Town Hall opened March 1, but Morrow said he worked on the building about two months prior to opening.
“Most everything we did to the space was cosmetic,” he said. “We refinished the furniture that was here, painted the walls and ceiling and redid the floors. It was a pretty low-cost start-up for a restaurant.”
Morrow said business has been slowly picking up since he opened, and hopes that the presence of nearby competitors, such as Jimmy’s American Cafe Ltd. and Tony Rose’s Skybox Lounge, will help boost traffic.
“It’s nice that people can come to one area and have different choices,” he said.
