The National Council on Compensation Insurance is recommending a 9.2 percent reduction in Iowa’s overall voluntary and assigned risk rate level for workers’ compensation, effective Jan. 1. The filing, released last week, marks the third straight year that the rate-making organization has recommended a rate reduction for the state. Rates dropped 8.7 percent this year and 3.9 percent in 2017, following approval by the Iowa Insurance Division The filing is based on premium and loss experience for policy years 2015 and 2016. Iowa workers’ comp claim frequency has declined in recent years, but indemnity and medical average cost per case continues to show a long-term upward trend.
